Passover and Our Children: Raising Warriors and Good Ol’ Chicken Soup

Passover centers around the story of Exodus: the Israelites’ plight from slavery and degradation through to the joy of liberation and dignity.

Each year, when I re-tell my three children the story of Passover, I often find I like to put a little more emphasis on Moses – who, as we all know, played a starring role as the heroic individual who couldn’t bear to observe the suffering of others and managed to push through his own limitations to take action on their behalf. In spite of his stutter, his “disability,” he found his voice to confront Pharaoh to ultimately free the Jewish people.

As the story goes, Pharaoh wasn’t too into this demand; he seemed to change his mind a lot, apparently there were plagues, God made a couple of appearances, and there was the splitting of the Red Sea. It was a busy month. But as all parents do, we pull from stories the parts we feel will inspire our children the most, to be the best versions of themselves.

And isn’t this a time, as good as any, to do just that? Inundated with incidents of Asian hate, widespread racism towards people of colour, and mounting antisemitism, let us all be inspired by the story of Passover to raise our kids to be the warriors, who, like Moses, can be brave enough to advocate for, and protect those who are all-too-often oppressed and the victims of hate. And even more than that, embolden them by honouring any disability they may have, be it a stutter, an illness, or even a food allergy, to incentivize them that much more, to fight that much harder, on behalf of others.

And hey, while inspiring our kids to save the world, why not enjoy some of the allergy-friendly Passover recipes we’ve compiled for you below:

Dr. Abby Herzig developed her career around the drive to understand and help children in need. After receiving her doctorate degree in clinical psychology, she continued to study child development and parent-child mental health at NYU Medical Center and Columbia University. An extension of her work with children, Abby is actively involved with UNICEF, serving on the New York Steering committee for UNICEF’s NextGen. She has traveled to South East Asia and Africa visiting hospitals, schools, and orphanages, advising UNICEF on child development and proper interventions for children and families at risk.
