5 Ways to Enjoy An Allergy-Friendly Easter

We’re getting ready and excited for the festivities and connection with loved ones (virtually or not) this Easter weekend.  If chocolate or candy pose any allergy risks to you and your family, there are lots of ways to make the most of this holiday without those edible delights. If, however, you are looking to indulge your kiddos with some sweet, edible options, check out Easter guides from Kids With Food Allergies and Spokin for inspiration. When you do find the treats they love, make sure to add them to your child’s allergy profile on the Belay app (ios/android) so you and their caregivers always know what treats are safe for your kids to enjoy, without the risk of an anaphylactic reaction.

We’ve rounded up five engaging ways to celebrate Easter – both with and without the traditional sweets. No matter how you decide to celebrate and make time for your food allergic children, they will feel exalted, yet safe, while hopping around this memorable Easter weekend.

1. Choose Safe Treat Options, Big or Small
Let the Easter Bunny know about the allergy-friendly candy and chocolate your food allergic child can safely enjoy. If you’re short on time or resources, hide fewer smaller “treasures” and design their hunt to lead to one grand, a special treat just for them. No matter how you organize this Easter egg hunt, your food allergic child will feel the love when they can confidently and safely enjoy the treats they have so successfully scavenged.

2. Use Alternative Treasures In Your Hunt
Include small toys, coins or other treasures in your Easter egg hunt that lead to a fun basket of allergy-friendly fun. Design and customize your food allergic child’s experience so that no matter what the other children have hunted, your child with food allergies will feel that his or her experience was just as special and exciting.

3. Plan a Recipe You Can Cook/Bake Together
Get your food allergic child involved in the kitchen! This is a great way to build their confidence with food, help them to understand their allergy better, and explore safe options, all while spending time together. Whether you plan a safe dessert together or let them tackle a side-dish for the big meal, your child will feel proud and excited to sit down for the family meal.

4. Schedule an Arts & Crafts Afternoon
There is a great DIY project for kids of any age! From classic egg painting, basket decorating, to printing Easter colouring pages, and crafting an Easter bunny headband, there are lots of ways to keep your kids occupied and having fun. Involve your kiddo, ask them what they’d like to do, find bits around the house to make it happen, and set up a “craft zone” inside or outside where the fun awaits!

5. Make Time for Family Fun
Set a plan to get outside, spend quality time together, and create memories and new traditions this Easter! Create an obstacle course outside or plan a movie night for the whole family. Garden together! Whatever you do, remember there are many ways to celebrate this spring weekend together that doesn’t need to be surrounded with food and sweets!
